They become more visible when you look at a light background (for example, a clear sky or a white sheet of paper). Although they can be bothersome, in many cases they are benign and common phenomena<\/b>, especially after the age of 40\u201350.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

[vc_custom_heading text=”Why do they occur?” el_class=”inocare-vision-test__heading”][vc_column_text]Floaters are caused by changes in the vitreous body<\/b> \u2013 a gel-like substance that fills much of the posterior segment of the eye and helps maintain the eye\u2019s shape, as well as providing mechanical support to the retina. The vitreous is composed mainly of water (99%), but also contains hyaluronic acid and proteins such as collagen. It is located behind the lens but in front of the retina, so light must pass through the vitreous body to reach the retina. Consequently, for light not to be obstructed, the vitreous body should always be perfectly transparent.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]With age, the vitreous liquefies and the collagen fibers inside it clump together, casting shadows on the retina.<\/p>\n

[vc_custom_heading text=”Are they dangerous?” el_class=”inocare-vision-test__heading”][vc_column_text]Most of the time, floaters are harmless<\/b> and merely bothersome. However, they can also be a warning sign<\/b> when they appear suddenly, in large numbers, or are accompanied by:<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u2022 flashes of light<\/b> (sparks or visual \u201clightning\u201d);<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u2022 loss of part of the visual field<\/b> (like a black \u201ccurtain\u201d);<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u2022 sudden blurred vision.<\/b><\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]These may indicate a retinal detachment <\/b>or a retinal tear <\/b>\u2013 ophthalmic emergencies requiring immediate examination.<\/p>\n
